August Luncheon - Defunding Utah Schools




Please register by noon Thursday, August 8 to ensure a meal is provided with your registration.

Meals are ordered in advance so late registrants cannot be guaranteed a meal.  Please select preference for regular or vegetarian meal during the registration process. 

This is an indoor, in person event.

Hollie Pettersson 
CEO Raise Your Hand Utah


Hollie started her career teaching adjudicated youth in 1994, over the years she broadened her experience by teaching in elementary, middle and high school classrooms. As a licensed psychologist she worked with individuals, families, and schools to build trauma informed practices and increase social and emotional learning (SEL). Hollie also serves as a university instructor working with pre-service teachers, aspiring school psychologists, and principals. She is a skilled leadership coach, drawing on lessons learned through administrative roles at the state-, district-, and school-levels and the experiences she shares with school and district partners across the country. Through a 2007 ballot initiative, a transformation district of 34k students was established and Hollie was appointed as a key cabinet member, Director of Teaching and Learning. She facilitated restructuring of all academic programs to enable sustainable innovation and implementation of evidence-based practices for curriculum, instruction, assessment, and teacher and administrator learning. She has developed several curricular programs, serves on boards for mission driven organizations, and is a frequent author of articles on student achievement, educational improvement, teacher leadership, and social impact.

Dawn Stevenson

A career educator, an English teacher and school counselor by training, who spent 17 years at the Utah State Board of Education working to improve outcomes for students and schools. Her application on behalf of Provo High School was recognized by the US Army Planning for Life Awards as one of two National Honorees. She is a past president of the Utah School Counselor Association. She served on several national committees for the DeWitt/Wallace and College Board Transforming School Counseling Initiatives. She was a member of the 2004 National Task Force of the American School Counselor Association that developed the 2004 ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs, First and Second Editions. In 2009, she was recognized as the national School Counseling Coordinator/Director of the year for the American School Counselor Association.

She co-wrote with one of her graduate students Chapter 2: What Government Policy Makers Need to Know for the ISPREC International Handbook on School Counseling.  She served as adjunct faculty and lead faculty for master’s degree students in the school counselor education program at the University of Phoenix for 17 years, and in the master’s level school counselor education program at the Utah State University for 6 years. Ms. Stevenson spent her professional career serving students, families and communities. She hopes to continue serving students, families, and communities in the Utah House of Representatives, as a current candidate for HD 27.



Renée Pinkney
UEA President


Park City social studies teacher Renée Pinkney was elected by her fellow educators in a statewide vote in early 2022 to serve a three-year term as president of the 18,000-member Utah Education Association. Her term began July 15, 2022.

Pinkney has taught in Utah public schools since 1995. She served as UEA vice president from 2019 to 2022 and as a member of the UEA Board of Directors representing the Eastern Utah UniServ from 2016 to 2019.

“Renée represents the very best of the good things happening in Utah’s public schools,” said UEA Executive Director Jennifer Boehme. “She is a professional educator dedicated to students and the teaching profession. She has a tremendous passion for public education and for creating an environment where all students can feel safe and find success.”


Karsten Walker

Karsten taught General Financial Literacy in Alpine School District.  He is a PhD candidate in the School of Teacher Education and Leadership (TEAL) Curriculum and Instruction program at Utah State University.

He will address how the Utah Legislature has trained us to expect so little for funding education and how Tax Increment Financing is taking money for education from Utah kids.

He has a Master's in Economic & Entrepreneurship from the University of Delaware.
